Science Advances: Avian long-jump
Congrats to Diana Chin for publishing her first research paper in
Science Advances showing how parrotlets
minimize energy by adjusting their jump angle to make economic foraging flights
in trees. Features in an
AAAS video as well as news stories in
New Scientist,
Scientific American, and
Popular Science explain how her new long-jump model predicts that bird
antecedents, such as Archaeopteryx, could have used partial wingbeats to significantly
extend their long-jumps and hone their foraging flight skills. The model was
developed based off of high speed kinematic recordings and novel direct,
in
vivo force measurements with our new aerodynamic force platform.
