The lab’s bird-inspired aerial robotics research has been featured in a special issue by National Geographic on scientist and engineers who’s work stands on the shoulders of Leonardo da Vinci. Eric, Laura and Marc were featured in a photo showing our new PigeonBot in the wind tunnel. David also contributed to a PBS episode on the invention of the airplane, which was a culmination of many centuries of science and innovation in which people were inspired by flying animals. Remarkably, there is still much that we don’t know about how animals fly, in particular birds, and this sparks our biological curiosity and drives our research. At the same time, we feel challenged, because there are no bird-sized aerial robots that can fly as well.
